What goes into this Recipe

The ingredients needed to make halloween chocolate chip cookies.
  • Butter: Using melted butter allows you to make the chocolate chip cookie dough without a mixer. So the recipe comes together quickly.
  • Brown Sugar: Adding a bit more brown sugar than white sugar helps to give the cookies a soft texture.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips: My favorite chocolate chips to use but dark chocolate chips and white chocolate chips can also be used.
  • Orange Candy-Coated Chocolates: Use orange Reese’s Pieces or M&M’s to give the cookies great color and flavor.

Add-In Variations

Instead of adding mini chocolate chips and orange candy to the dough try a different combination.  Try using peanut butter chips and candy corn in these easy Halloween Chocolate Chip Cookies.

How to make Halloween Chocolate Chip Cookies

1. Melt the butter in a large bowl and add both sugars.  Stir by hand until everything is combined.  Then add the egg and vanilla, continue to stir until incorporated.  Next, add the dry ingredients {flour, baking soda and salt} and mix until you have a thick dough.  Add the chocolate chips and stir until evenly distributed.

2. Finally, add the chopped orange coated chocolate candies to the dough and mix.

3. Use a medium cookie scoop {or about 1 1/2 tablespoons} and scoop dough into your hand.  Roll the cookie dough into a smooth ball and place onto a silicone mat {or parchment paper} lined baking sheet.

4. Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes or until the cookies are set and starting to turn golden brown. Once baked, remove from the oven and add a few additional chocolate chips to the tops of the cookies, followed by 3-4 edible eyeballs. Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheet. This will ensure that the Halloween Monster cookies have chewy centers.

Expert Tips

  • Would you rather have a big and thick cookie? No problem, try this Thick Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe instead.
  • If you want to add more color to the cookies add different colored chocolates. You can find purple and neon green Halloween M&M’s and they would be so much fun.
  • Adjust the size of the cookie by the size of the cookie scoop. Using a scoop will keep them all the same size and allow them to bake up evenly but there are small scoops and large scoops too. If you decide to make Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies, bake them for 7-9 minutes and for the large cookies, bake them for 9-12 minutes.
  • Add additional chocolate chips and the edible eyeballs after baking. This will allow you to place them in the exact spot you want.
  • Place the candy eyes on or next to chocolate chips. Once the chocolate chips harden they will hold the edible eyes in the cookie.

Storage and Freezing

Store- Keep the cookies in a good airtight container or zipper bag at room temperature for up to 4 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Freeze- These cookies freeze well for up to 3 months. For best results, be sure that the cookies are covered by a few layers of plastic wrap or in a freezer bag.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter, {melted}
  • ½ cup brown sugar, {packed}
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips
  • cup orange coated chocolate candies {Reese's Pieces or M&M's}, {chopped}
  • 80 mini edible eyeballs

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Microwave the butter for about 40 seconds to just barely melt it. If there is still a piece of butter that isn't melted then swirl it until it melts {you don't want the butter to be hot or the eggs will curdle}.
  • Add both sugars and mix until creamy {by hand works great}. Add the vanilla and the egg, mix until incorporated but do not over mix or the dough will be stiff.
  • Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until everything is incorporated. Add the chocolate chips and stir until they are evenly distributed. Finally add the chopped orange coated chocolates and stir it into the dough.
  • Scoop the dough with a medium cookie scoop {or about 1 ½ tablespoons} into your hand and roll until smooth. Place on a silicone {or parchment} lined baking sheet and add a few additional mini chocolate chips to the top {if desired}.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes. You want to remove them from the oven when they are puffy and just starting to turn golden. The key to getting the super soft cookie is to not over bake them. Once you remove them from the oven, add the edible eyeballs to the top of each cookie and let them cool completely on the cookie sheet {if you can wait that long}. This will allow them to set up perfectly.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature {or in the refrigerator} for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • If you want to add more color to the cookies add different colored chocolates. You can find purple and neon green Halloween M&M’s and they would be super fun.
  • Place the candy eyes on or next to chocolate chips. Once the chocolate chips harden they will hold the edible eyes in the cookie.
