In N Out Burger Sloppy Joes


In N Out Burger Sloppy Joes are EVERYTHING you would expect from the burger you crave.  The best news is that you can make them in the comfort of your own home.  Plus, they only take about 20 minutes to pull together.  All of the awesome flavors we all love, your just eating it with a fork.  It is my families new favorite dinner and I know it will be yours too!

We live about 3 1/2 hours from the nearest In N Out restaurant and so when a burger craving hits {I know it happens to you too!}, driving that far just isn’t an option.  So I set out to discover what it is that In n Out does to make their burgers so darn special.

Lucky for you {and me} I think I have nailed it!  But instead of making a burger because who wants that mess?  I have made a sloppy joe.  Sloppy joes are such a fun way to eat this burger!

In N Out Burger Secrets

  • Yellow mustard is added to the hamburger while cooking.  It gives it a distinctive flavor that I couldn’t quite put my finger on until I used it myself.  Even if you are not a mustard fan, try it!
  • Cook down the grilled onions by steaming them.  This not only speeds up the process but it brings out the sweet flavor and gives them the legendary brown color and texture.
  • The sauce is a Thousand Island type dressing.  Now you could use a bottle you have in the fridge but I don’t recommend it.  With only 5 ingredients, it is super simple to make and is worth the effort.
  • American cheese all of the way!  I know that so many people don’t love American cheese because it is processed.  But here is the thing…American cheese melts beautifully and gives it just the right flavor.
  • Don’t forget the fixings.  What do you like on your In N Out burger?  Lettuce?  Tomato?  Pickle?  Pile them on top.
  • Don’t get fancy with the bun.  The bun needs to be good quality but understated.  No onion, potato or sesame seeds here.  Plain is perfection.

Steaming Grilled Onions

Begin with a little butter and whole lot of onion because we know they cook down a lot.  Then add a pinch of salt and pepper over medium heat until they start to brown ever so slightly.

Once you get a little color on the onions, it is time to start adding water and steaming them.  The trick is to add a tablespoon or two at a time.  Stir and wait until it is evaporated and then repeat with more water.

Until you have onions that are brown and full of sweet flavor.

I used 1 pound of 93/7 ground beef.  The reason I used such a lean version is because I wanted to leave the fat in the pan.  In N Out burgers are notoriously greasy.  It drips down your arms in pure goodness.  But you could always use a fattier ground beef and just remove some of the fat.  

Once the meat is almost fully cooked {still slightly pink}, add the yellow mustard and stir to coat.  Keep on the heat until the meat is cooked through and the mustard is evenly distributed.

We can’t forget about the sauce.  After all, it is one of my very favorite features.  A mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, vinegar and sugar it is a lot like a Thousand Island dressing.  Only I think it is better and worth making it yourself.

Now we are to the very best part {except of course eating}…assembly.  Begin with the bottom bun and then top with a generous amount of the sauce.

Top the sauce with our meat mixture.

Then add a healthy helping of grilled onions.  Note:  If you are not a grilled onion fan then just omit them altogether or chop some raw onion and replace with that.

Followed by a slice of ole American cheese.  I sure do love the melting quality!

Finally, you get to add the fixings of your liking.  I went for lettuce, tomato and pickle but add whatever suits your fancy.

And then add the top bun because a burger {even a sloppy joe version} isn’t complete without one.  

I suggest eating it with a fork but you could try and pick this bad boy up to eat.  We have even ate them open faced for twice as much goodness.  It is really up to you but one thing I can absolutely promise is this…if you are a In N Out burger fan, these sloppy joes will make you HAPPY!

Quick Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes with Bacon

Meat Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef {I used 93/7 and didn't drain the grease}
  • 6 slices cooked bacon {chopped}
  • ¼ cup yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper


  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Other Ingredients

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce {shredded}
  • 1 medium tomato {diced}
  • 2 large dill pickles {diced}


Meat Filling

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and add hamburger. Use your spoon to break meat apart and continue to cook over medium heat until it is cooked through. Add chopped bacon, yellow mustard, salt and pepper. Stir until the bacon is evenly distributed and the mustard is coating the mixture. Turn heat down and keep warm.


  • Combine sauce ingredients and whisk together until combined. Set aside.

Assembling Sloppy Joes

  • Add a generous amount of sauce onto the bottom hamburger bun, followed by meat mixture, American cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomato and pickles. Add top bun {if desired} and enjoy.


Leftover cheeseburger sloppy joe filling and toppings can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
The meat mixture can easily be frozen for up to 3 months.
