What goes into this Recipe

The ingredients needed to make cookies and cream frosting.
  • Butter:  Softened butter helps to give this frosting great flavor and texture.  I prefer salted butter but unsalted butter can also be used, just add a 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Cream Cheese: The tang of cream cheese balances the flavors and results in a less sweet frosting.
  • Powdered Sugar: Not only does this sugar give the frosting a fabulous sweetness but it also gives it body.
  • Oreo Cookies:  Crushed Oreos are the main attraction in this Oreo frosting recipe. If you prefer Golden Oreos, you need to check out this Golden Oreo Cheesecake and Golden Oreo Whoopie Pies.

How to make Cookies and Cream Frosting

  1. Start by combining the softened butter and cream cheese in a large bowl.  Mix with a hand mixer {or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment} on high speed until you have a creamy and smooth texture.
  2. Add the powdered sugar 1 cup at a time until all of the icing sugar has been added.  You may feel like it is too thick but continue to mix on low speed until you have the right consistency.
Combining the cream cheese and butter, then adding the powdered sugar to the frosting.
  1. Finally, add the crushed Oreo cookies and either continue to mix with the electric mixer or stir them in by hand until they are evenly distributed.
  2. Use this homemade frosting on top of a chocolate cake or chocolate cupcakes.  It would also be fabulous on a vanilla cake or your favorite cookie.

Expert Tips

  • Start with room temperature butter and cream cheese.  This will give you a nice smooth and creamy frosting.  If you try to use cold ingredients you will find that the frosting will have lumps of both butter and cream cheese.
  • There are a lot of ways to crush the Oreo cookies.  Add them to a food processor until they are broken down into fine crumbs or add the cookies to a plastic bag and crush using a rolling pin.  I even like to break them up with my hands when I am in a hurry.
  • If you feel like the Oreo buttercream frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of heavy cream or milk.  This is the easiest way to give you a softer frosting that is perfect for spreading on the sides of your cake.
  • This easy Oreo frosting would be amazing on so many different desserts.  Add the fluffy buttercream to the top of this Oreo cake, sheet cake cookies or even these sandwich cookies.
  • If you decide to pipe this frosting be sure that the decorative piping tip is large enough to allow the cookie pieces to pass through.  If you try to use a small tip the cookies will get stuck.

Recipe FAQs

How do I store this frosting?

This Oreo cookie frosting should be refrigerated because it has cream cheese in it.  Be sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container and it will keep for up to 4 days.

What is Oreo icing made of?

It starts with a combination of both butter and cream cheese.  Then it is sweetened with powdered sugar and the cookie crumbs.

Can I use any Oreo cookie flavor?

Absolutely!  There are so many different flavor combinations and all of them would be amazing in this frosting.  The taste of the frosting will change of course but you can experiment.  Try mint, peanut butter, birthday cake, golden or lemon for delicious change. This Golden Oreo Dessert Lasagna is also a great recipe.

What is the white layer in Oreos called?

The white layer in the middle of the chocolate cookies is called the “creme”.  The funny thing about that is that it actually contains no dairy.
