Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter {softened}
  • 8 ounces cream cheese {softened}
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup Oreo cookies {crushed}-about 16 cookies

Instructions

  • In a large bowl combine butter and cream cheese. Mix together using a hand held {or stand} mixer until creamy and smooth.
  • Add powdered sugar 1 cup at a time until all of the sugar is incorporated. Finally add the crushed Oreo cookies and mix until they are evenly distributed.

Notes

    • Start with room temperature butter and cream cheese.  This will give you a nice smooth and creamy frosting.  If you try to use cold ingredients you will find that the frosting will have lumps of both butter and cream cheese.
    • To crush the cookies, add them to a food processor until they are broken down into fine crumbs or add the cookies to a plastic bag and crush using a rolling pin.  I even like to break them up with my hands when I am in a hurry.
    • If you feel like the Oreo buttercream frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of heavy cream or milk.
    • If you decide to pipe this frosting be sure that the decorative piping tip is large enough to allow the cookie pieces to pass through.  If you try to use a small tip the cookies will get stuck.
