If there’s one dessert I make every 4th of July, it’s this Flag Fruit Pizza. I use refrigerated sugar cookie dough for the crust {because you know I love a good shortcut} and top it with creamy cheesecake frosting and fresh fruit. It’s easy, festive, and always the first thing to disappear!

One of things that really makes this dessert pizza a keeper is that looks like you spent way more time on it than you did, which is exactly my kind of recipe.

In fact, the first time I served it—people were grabbing slices before I even got a chance to set it down. They also go crazy for this Firecracker Bundt Cake and Festive Fruit Salad. It is proof that the simplest recipes can also be the best.

What goes into this Recipe

A photo of the ingredients needed for this flag fruit pizza.
  • Sugar Cookie Dough- Using store-bought sugar cookie dough allows you to make this dessert quickly.
  • Whipped Topping- Adding Cool Whip to the frosting gives the texture of a no bake cheesecake.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Variations

Use refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough, sugar cookie mix or your favorite cookie recipe. This sugar cookie or this easy mini chocolate chip cookie recipe would both be wonderful.

If you don’t want to make your own frosting, use a store bought cream cheese frosting. You could also make this marshmallow buttercream for this flag fruit pizza recipe.

Fresh berries work best on this patriotic fruit pizza but other types of fruit work too. I suggest using fruits that are red and blue in color. Blackberries and raspberries are great options.

How to make an easy American Flag Dessert Pizza

  1. To make this patriotic dessert, cut the sugar cookie dough into 20 rounds.
  2. Place the rounds of cookie dough onto a pizza pan in a circle.
Steps 1 and 2 of making a flag fruit pizza. 1, slice refrigerated sugar cookie dough. 2, place the slices on a baking sheet in a circle shape.
  1. Press the cookie rounds together with your fingers. Make sure that there are no holes in the crust.
  2. Take the ends of the sugar cookie crust and roll out into a circle that is about a 1/4 inch thick. Cut out using a star cookie cutter or stencil.
Steps 3 and 4 of making a flag fruit pizza. 3, press the cookie dough slices into a solid circle. 4, take the end slices, roll out and cut out a star.
  1. Bake the cookie crust in a 350 degree oven for 18-22 minutes or until the cookie is baked through and golden brown.
  2. For the frosting, combine the cream cheese and powdered sugar in a medium bowl. Add the whipped topping to the mixture and mix. Top the cookie with a thin even layer of the cheesecake frosting.
Steps 5 and 6 of making a flag fruit pizza. 5, bake the cookie dough crust. 6, top the crust with cheesecake frosting.
  1. Next, top the frosting with sliced fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries in an American flag pattern.
  2. To finish the sweet pizza, use the rest of the cream cheese mixture to make the white stripes in between rows of sliced strawberries and around the border {using a pastry bag or zipper bag}. Finally, add the cookie star on top of the blueberries. Cut with a pizza cutter and serve.
Steps 7 and 8 of making a flag fruit pizza. 7, top with sliced strawberries and blueberries. 8, finish with remaining frosting and star cookie.

Expert Tips

  • Make sure that the sugar cookie dough is cold. The chill in the dough will ensure that it doesn’t spread too much while baking.
  • While the cookie is baking, prepare the fruit. Wash the fruit and slice strawberries before decorating so the process goes quickly when creating the flag design.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag and star tip using a zipper bag. Cut a triangle from the corner of one side of the bottom of the bag and fill with frosting.
  • Use your favorite fruit to decorate the top of the cookie pizza. Fresh raspberries, blackberries, watermelon or grapes would all be delicious.
  • Allow a cookie stored in the fridge to come to room temperature before serving. Doing so will give you a soft cookie.

Storage and Freezing

To store this flag fruit pizza, place the cookie onto a large tray and cover tightly with plastic wrap. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

The cookie {or crust} part of this recipe can easily be frozen for up to 3 months. I do not suggest freezing it with the fresh fruit or frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1 tube refrigerated sugar cookie dough, {16.5 ounces}

Cheesecake Frosting

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, {softened}
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup whipped topping

Fruit

  • 1 cup strawberries, {sliced}
  • ½ cup blueberries

Instructions

Cookie

  • Preheat the oven for 350°. Spray a pizza pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Slice the cold sugar cookie dough into 20 rounds {keep ends for the star}. Place the rounds on the prepared baking sheet in a circle. Press the cookies together to create a crust.
  • Bake crust for 18-22 minutes or until the middle is baked through and it is golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow the cookie crust to cool completely.
  • While the cookie is cooling, take the ends of the sugar cookie dough and add a teaspoon {or two} of flour. Combine and roll out into a circle. Cut out a star using a cookie cutter or a knife. Place onto a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes. If the cookie spreads too much, reuse the star cookie cutter to get a nice star shape.

Cheesecake Frosting and Assembly

  • Once the crust is cool, add the cream cheese to a medium bowl and mix until creamy using a hand held {or stand} mixer. Add the powdered sugar and mix until smooth. Finally, add the whipped topping and gently mix into the cream cheese.
  • Add a thin layer of cream cheese frosting over the top of the cookie {keep remaining frosting for the stripes and border}. Add blueberries to the upper left hand corner of the pizza. Then add stripes of sliced strawberries to create an American flag.
  • Add the remaining frosting to a piping bag with a star tip {or a zipper bag}. Pipe in between the strawberry lines and around the border of the cookie. Top the blueberries with the star cookie. Serve or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
