As the co-owner of a charcuterie business that I run with my sister, I’ve made countless boards, and salami roses are always a showstopper. They add height, texture, and a fun visual element that makes any board feel special. The best part? They’re incredibly simple to make!

Four salami roses. One large and three small roses.

How to make Roses out of Salami

The process couldn’t be easier. You start by layering slices of salami around the rim of a small glass, overlapping each piece slightly to create the petals. Once you’ve built up the layers, you simply flip the glass over onto your board, and just like that—you have a perfectly shaped salami rose!

Whether you’re creating a board for a small gathering or a large charcuterie table, salami roses are an effortless way to impress your guests. We use them in nearly every board we make because they make the presentation feel more polished and professional.

Ingredients Needed

The only ingredient you need is pre-sliced salami but the truth is that you can also use other meats for a beautiful salami rose.

Prosciutto, pepperoni, turkey, ham and roast beef are all great meat options as long as they are sliced thin.  To get a good end result you will want to cut bigger slices of deli meat down with a round cookie cutter to keep everything the same size.

How to make using a Glass

This is the first way that I learned to make roses with salami. The simple process uses an item that everyone has {a glass} and once you start making them you can adjust to any size flower by changing the size of the glass you use.

For smaller flowers use a shot glass or champagne flute.  Use a bigger glass for a large salami rose.

1. Fold the first slice of salami in half and place over the rim of the glass with half of the salami pieces inside and outside of the glass.  Continue adding slices, being sure to overlap by 1/4-1/2 inch until the rim is covered. This creates the first layer.

2. They add a second layer using the same process.  Keep adding layers of salami until you have 6-9 layers.

Steps 1 and 2 of making a rose with salami and a glass.

3. Once you have all of the layers added, turn the glass upside down and onto a small plate. Carefully remove the glass to reveal a rose shape.

4. Use the salami rose immediately or cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Steps 3 and 4 of making salami roses with a glass. Turning over the glass and removing it.

How to make by rolling

To make smaller meat roses, all you will need is a toothpick to keep the salami rosettes together.

1. Fold 5-10 slices of salami in half. Place the first one down and then add the others in a long line. Each piece of salami should be added to the middle of the one before.

2. Starting with the first salami slice that was laid down, begin to roll the line of meat tightly. Once you are at the end, use a toothpick to secure it.

Steps 1 and 2 of rolling salami to make a rose.

Expert Tips

  • Press and hold the salami over the edge of the clean glass so that they take the shape of the glass. This will ensure that the rose stays together nicely.
  • Use a variety of glasses and meats to make an array of roses. This adds awesome texture and flavors to the board.  It is also an easy way to add a gorgeous detail to snack boards.
  • The best way to store the roses is on the glass. Cover it tightly with saran wrap or an airtight container and refrigerate.
  • Add cheese or fresh fruit to the rolled roses.  Using a mini brie bite or cubed melon to the toothpick for a great way to add a fun twist.

FAQs

How many pieces of salami does it take to make a rose?

The number of salami slices you use will depend on the size of glass and the amount of layers you decide to use.

For a smaller roses you will only need about 15 but for a large one it will take 24-26 slices.

Can I make the charcuterie roses ahead of time?

They can absolutely be made ahead of time which makes assembling the charcuterie board so much easier.

I suggest making them anywhere from a couple hours to a day ahead of time.

Can I make pepperoni roses?

Yes! To adjust for the size of the pepperoni you may need to use a smaller glass but the same technique as above.

What size of salami do I use?

I suggest using a larger size of meat for making roses but you can adjust the size of each flower by changing the size of the glass.
