3 Things to love about this Banana Chocolate Pie

It has double the banana flavor!  Using banana cream pudding mix and adding fresh bananas takes this easy no bake pie to the next level.

Also, who doesn’t love chocolate?  Bananas and chocolate go together so well, and you’ll love the added texture the chocolate chips give this pie.

You can make the pie in 5 minutes.  No joke!  Start to finish…5 minutes is all you need.  I always suggest letting it chill for a couple of hours but you don’t have to.

Ingredients Needed

  • Chocolate Pie Crust: Grab a ready made pie crust from the baking section of the grocery store.
  • Instant Banana Pudding Mix: Combining the instant pudding with whipped topping gives the banana pudding filling the perfect creamy texture.
  • Chocolate Chips: Adding chocolate chips to a banana cream pie is genius! Not only does the chocolate flavor pair well with the banana but it also adds great texture.
  • Fresh Bananas: While the banana pudding would be enough, I couldn’t help but add a layer of bananas in the pie too.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Recipe Variations

Crust – you don’t have to use a store bought chocolate cookie crust, in fact you can make a homemade Oreo crust if you prefer.  A homemade graham cracker crust, vanilla wafer crust or even Golden Oreo Crust would be delicious too.

Filling – some recipes don’t use banana pudding because of the fresh bananas already in the pie.  If you prefer, use a box of vanilla pudding mix or even chocolate for a fun and tasty chocolate banana pie.

Chocolate Chips – semi sweet mini chocolate chips are my jam but if they are not yours then use the regular variety.  There are also different types of chocolate that can be used.  Try dark chocolate, milk chocolate or even white chocolate chips.

How to Make this Chocolate Chip Banana Cream Pie with Instant Pudding:

  1. Remove the plastic top from the ready made chocolate cookie crust and place the crust into a pie plate.
  2. Combine the banana pudding mix with milk and whisk until thick.  Add the whipped topping.

  1. Add remaining whipped topping to the top of the pie and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips.  I have used a piping bag with a star tip to add the whipped topping but you can spread it on just as easily.
  2. Finally, add a few sliced bananas around the perimeter of the pie and serve!

Expert Tips

  • Put the ready made pie crust in a pie plate without removing it from the foil pan.  This not only helps with serving because it adds some structure but it also makes it look better.
  • Don’t add as much milk as the pudding packet suggests.  If you add the full amount of milk then your filling will not be thick enough.  Adding a little less milk is what helps give you the nice thick filling.
  • Add whipped topping to the filling and to the top of the pie.  Adding whipped topping to the filling will give it extra body and creaminess.  Adding it to the top of the pie gives it that extra special touch.
  • Don’t slice the bananas for the top until ready to serve.  Wait until you are ready to serve to slice the final bananas for the top.  This will keep them from turning brown and will give you an extra fresh topping.

Storage and Freezing

Store: This chocolate banana cream pie has dairy and so refrigerating the pie is important. In fact, this cream pie can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Freezing: One of the best things about any kind of cream pie is that you can serve it cold, frozen or even partially frozen.

This makes cream pies a great candidate for freezing.  Finish the pie without any toppings, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost in the refrigerator for best results.

Recipe FAQs

How do you keep the bananas from turning brown?

You can always brush the bananas with a little lemon juice {or any kind of citrus juice}.  I like to wait and add the bananas to the top right before serving.

Adding citrus to the bananas can add another flavor to the pie which you might not mind but I prefer to wait.  The bananas in the middle of the pie will be just fine.

Can this Chocolate Chip Banana Cream Pie be made in advance?

You can make this pie a couple of days ahead of time which makes it a great pie for the holidays.

If you make it ahead I would suggest waiting to add the whipped topping, mini chocolate chips and fresh bananas to the top until ready to serve.

Ingredients

  • 1 chocolate cookie crust, ready made
  • 3.4 ounces banana instant pudding mix
  • 1 ¼ cups milk, I used 1%
  • 8 ounces whipped topping
  • ½ cup mini semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 bananas, sliced

Instructions

  • Remove the plastic insert from the ready made crust and place the crust {including the foil liner} into a pie plate for serving.

Banana Cream Pudding

  • Combine instant banana pudding mix with milk and whisk until thick. Add 1 cup of the whipped topping to the pudding mixture and fold it in until evenly distributed.

Pie Assembly

  • Add half of the banana pudding mixture to the bottom of the chocolate cookie crust in an even layer. Top with sliced bananas in a single layer that covers the pudding. Top the bananas with 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips, followed by the rest of the banana pudding spread out into an even layer. NOTE: If you are making ahead or freezing this pie then stop here until ready to serve.
  • Add the remaining whipped topping to a piping {or zipper} bag fitted with a large star tip and cover the top of the pie with whipped topping. NOTE: If you don't have a piping bag or star tip then just spread it out into an even layer. Sprinkle the remaining mini chocolate chips over the whipped topping in an even layer.
  • Serve or refrigerate for up to 3 days.

Notes

  • To freeze the pie, stop before adding the toppings and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap.  Freeze for up 3 months.  Defrost in the refrigerator.
