Using canned peaches allows you to bring the fresh taste of summer to your kitchen any time of year while the cake mix creates the perfect top layer. The same technique is used for this cherry cake mix cobbler and blueberry cobbler with cake mix.
I have been having a version of this easy to make peach cobbler since childhood. Trust me when I tell you to serve warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Everyone will be so happy that you did!
Recipe Ingredients

- Canned Peaches: These provide the sweet, juicy base for our simple peach cobbler recipe. The heavy syrup helps create that gooey, delicious texture. They are also the main ingredient in this amazing peach cobbler pound cake and peach crisp.
- Vanilla Cake Mix: A box of cake mix is our shortcut to a perfectly sweet and golden topping. I used white cake mix, but you could use yellow cake mix if you prefer. Any brand you find at the grocery store will work fine.
- Butter: When grated over the top, it helps the cake mix turn golden and crispy as it bakes. It also adds a rich flavor to the whole dessert.
- Cinnamon: Just a little bit of cinnamon adds warmth to the easy cobbler recipe. It goes perfectly with the peaches! You can omit it if you prefer and have a 3-ingredient recipe.
See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
Variations
- If you like a bit more spice, add a pinch of nutmeg, some ground cloves, or even a bit of ground ginger along with the cinnamon.
- Use a white or yellow cake mix instead of vanilla for the topping.
- Change the canned fruit for your favorite kind of pie filling. Try apple, cherry or blueberry.
How to make Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix and Canned Peaches
- Open your cans of peaches and pour them into the prepared baking dish, making sure they’re spread out evenly. Don’t drain the syrup – it helps create a gooey peach filling.
- In a bowl, mix the dry cake mix and cinnamon together. This helps distribute the cinnamon evenly throughout the topping. Sprinkle the cake mix mixture over the top of the peaches, covering them completely. Use your fingers to gently press it down.

- Take your cold butter and grate it over the top of the cake mix. Try to spread it out as evenly as you can. This will help create that crispy, golden top we’re after.
- Pop the easy cake mix peach cobbler in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the top of the cobbler is a beautiful golden brown color. Once it’s out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes and serve the peach dump cake warm.

Expert Tips
- Don’t forget to combine the cake mix and cinnamon together. This ensures that the cinnamon is in every single bite.
- Use cold butter. That way it will grate nicely on top of the cake.
- Don’t drain the peaches. The syrup adds moisture and sweetness to the fruit filling.
- Gently press the cake mix into the peaches. This helps it absorb the juices as it bakes.
How to store and Freeze
Store: Once cooled, cover this easy peach cobbler recipe plastic wrap or aluminum foil {or keep it in an airtight container} and keep it in the refrigerator. It will stay good for up to 5 days. The cake topping might soften a bit over time, but it will still taste delicious.
Freeze: This dump peach cobbler freezes well for up to 3 months. Let it cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil before freezing. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven for the best texture.
How to reheat
The best way to reheat a cobbler is in the oven. Place the cobbler in an oven safe container at 350 degrees. Heat for 10-15 minutes or until it is warmed through and the top is slightly crispy.
It can also be reheated in the microwave in 15 second increments but the top can soften doing it this way.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can use fresh peaches if it’s peach season. You’ll need about 6 cups of fresh, ripe peaches. Toss them with 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, then let them sit for 30 minutes to release their juices.
The cornstarch will help thicken the peach juice as the cobbler bakes. Use this mixture in place of the canned peaches. You might need to increase the baking time by 5-10 minutes. Keep an eye on it and bake until the top is golden brown and the peach mixture is bubbling.
It’s normal for the cobbler to be a bit juicy right out of the oven. Let it cool for 15-20 minutes before serving to allow the juices to thicken up.
Yes, you can prepare it a day ahead. Keep it in the fridge and reheat in a 350°F oven for about 20 minutes before serving.
You can leave it out overnight without worrying about food poisoning BUT keeping it at room temperature will make the cobbler lose its great texture. I always suggest refrigerating it for best results.
