I feel like this post needs a drum roll!  We have been deep in the trenches of Cream Cheese Sugar Cookies {Stained Glass, Honey Nut Rugelach & Linzer} for the entire week and we have hit the finish line…Glace’ Icing.  It is like the cherry on top of a sundae or the icing on the cake cookie {hahaha}.   For years I was looking for an alternative to Royal Icing.  Royal Icing makes such beautiful cookies but I hated the thought of eating raw egg whites and now with my egg allergy…it is out of the question.  I also love that it is easy to work with and it will harden completely, so that you can stack them without the frosting getting ruined.

The great thing about this recipe is that it is forgiving.  By that I mean that if it is too thick, then add a little more milk or corn syrup…if it is too thin, then add more powdered sugar.  I think that decorating cookies can be a little intimidating but I am going to show you how to make all of the above patterns with frosting, a spoon, 2 Ziploc bags and a toothpick.  The consistency you are looking for is fairly thick.  You don’t want it to slide off of the cookie when you do the base layer {which for all of these cookies, is white}.  Before you begin you want to take about 1/3 of the frosting and divide it into two bowls.  Add food coloring to each bowl until you get the desired color {I just used the liquid food coloring next to the spices in the grocery store}.  Once it is colored then spoon it into a Ziploc bag and cut a very small triangle off of one bottom edge {they are going to be our piping bags}.  To add the base layer I used a small spoon {I like to use a baby spoon} to spread it out close to the edges and make a solid surface.  Then it is just a matter of drawing lines and using a toothpick.  You want to be sure to work on one cookie at a time because the base layer can not be set for this to work.  If you want to stack them then let them set up for at least 8 hours.  Here we go…

To make this cookie I made horizontal lines over the base layer and then used a tooth pick to either pull the lines up or down.  I alternated to get this look…

For this cookie, I made dots of colored frosting around the edge of the cookie and over the base layer, then used a toothpick to pull the dots into this pattern…

The holly is just like the one above but you will use two dots for the holly leaves and three for the holly berries…

To make this cute cuff on the mitten I made a zigzag up and down with each color along the bottom of cookie and then pulled the toothpick through horizontally…

Glace' Icing

Glace' icing is a great alternative to royal icing.  It is easy to work with and dries nicely.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 6 tbsp milk {I used 1%}
  • 6 tbsp light corn syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the above ingredients into a medium sized bowl and whisk together.  If the icing is too thick, then add additional milk {1 tsp at a time}, if the icing is too thin, then add additional powdered sugar {1 tbsp at a time} until you get the desired consistency.
