How to make a Red Velvet Crumb Cake
Red Velvet Crumb Cake starts with a cake mix. Prepare it just like the back of the box says, nothing complicated. If you want to add something extra then 1/4 cup of sour cream would be great. I like to use a hand held mixer but you can definitely do this step by hand.
Pour the prepared cake mix into a 9×13 pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray.
The crumb topping comes together quickly. Combine butter, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon in a medium bowl using a fork or pastry blender.
The key to make the perfect crumb topping is to not over mix. If you over mix the topping it will become more of a paste and you want it to be a crumb.
Take the crumb mixture and spread it liberally all over the prepared red velvet cake mix. It should cover the entire cake nicely.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted near the center comes out clean.
When the cake is baked you will notice that a lot of the crumb topping has sunk down into the cake and that is exactly what you want.
Those little nuggets of goodness sink down into the cake and create pockets of buttery goodness.
You can serve it warm or at room temperature and either way is amazing! My family raved about it for days!
It might not be what you would typically think of for breakfast but it couldn’t be more perfect! The color, the flavors, the texture…all combine to make a crumb cake that dreams are made of.
I promise that your holiday will be a whole lot better with it served on your table.

Red Velvet Cake Batter
- 1 box red velvet cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
Crumb Topping
- 1/2 cup butter {softened}
- 1 cup brown sugar {packed}
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9x13 pan with non-stick spray {set aside}.
Red Velvet Cake Batter
Combine the red velvet cake mix, eggs and oil in a medium bowl and mix until everything is combined well. {I used a hand held mixer} Pour batter into prepared 9x13 pan and spread into an even layer.
Crumb Topping
In a small bowl combine all of the crumb mixture ingredients. Work the mixture together into small crumbs using a fork. Don't over work the mixture or you will get a paste and it will change the texture. Sprinkle the crumbs in an even and thick layer over the top of the red velvet cake batter. Bake for 35-40 minutes.
Remove your red velvet crumb cake from the oven and serve warm or let the cake cool completely and cover. Cake will stay moist for 3 days at room temperature or 4-5 in the refrigerator. It also freezes for up to 3 months.
