Grilled Onions

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion {diced}
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb. ground beef {I used 93/7 and didn't drain the grease}
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet relish
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp white vinegar

Other Ingredients

  • 4 soft hamburger buns
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1/4 head iceberg lettuce {shredded}
  • 1 medium tomato {diced}
  • 2 dill pickles {diced}

Grilled Onions

  1. In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, add tablespoon of butter and diced onions. Season onions with 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cook until onions are translucent and starting to brown, stirring occasionally {about 10 minutes}. Once onions begin to appear dry, add a tablespoon of water to skillet and stir. Continue cooking until water evaporates and repeat process, adding 1 tablespoon of water until onions are soft and deep brown. About 5 times total. Turn heat down and keep warm.

Meat Filling

  1. While onions are cooking, heat a large skillet over medium high heat, add burger. Using your spoon, break meat apart and continue to cook over medium heat until it is almost cooked through {there may be a little pink}. Add yellow mustard and stir to coat. Continue to cook until burger is completed cooked through. Turn heat down and keep warm.

  1. Combine sauce ingredients and whisk together until combined. Set aside.

Assembling Sloppy Joes

  1. Add a generous amount of sauce onto the bottom hamburger bun, followed by meat mixture, grilled onions, American cheese, shredded lettuce, diced tomato and pickles. Add top bun and enjoy.

Recipe Notes

  •  If grilled onions are not your thing, then omit them altogether or use raw onion.
