The BEST Strawberry Shortcake Crunch Topping

One of my favorite ways to enjoy this topping is on a scoop of vanilla or strawberry ice cream, where the crunch and flavor contrast beautifully with the creamy texture. But its versatility doesn’t stop there! This strawberry crunch is also an amazing addition to cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, and even yogurt parfaits.

Whether you’re using it to top a homemade treat or just eating it by the spoonful (no judgment here!), this easy Strawberry Crunch Topping is one recipe you’ll want to keep on repeat.

    Strawberry Crunch Topping Ingredients

Ingredients needed to make strawberry crunch topping.
    • Freeze Dried Strawberries Using freeze-dried fruit is such a great way to get a punch of fruit flavor and that beautiful pink color without extra moisture that you would get from fresh fruit. You can freeze dry fresh strawberries yourself, or just buy them at your local grocery store.
    • Golden Oreos- My husband’s all-time favorite cookie!  The crumbs of this cookie create the perfect crunch.
    • Butter- Used in a softened form to help bind the strawberries and Oreo crumbs together and get just the right consistency in this strawberry crunch recipe.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Strawberry Shortcake Topping Tips

    • Make sure that you are getting the Golden Oreos and freeze dried strawberries into fine crumbs.  It is alright for there to be a bit of coarse crumb but you want everything to be smaller.  The powder from the freeze dried strawberries will coat the Oreo crumbs and that is what you want.
    • Work the butter into the crumb mixture well.  This takes a couple of minutes but don’t skip this step.  The butter is what will keep the Golden Oreos and strawberries together and help create the wonderful strawberry shortcake crumble recipe.  You want the butter to coat everything.
    • Be creative on what you put this Strawberry Shortcake Crunch on.  The options are endless!  My favorite ways to use it are in Strawberry Crunch Cheesecake ConesEasy Strawberry Shortcake Crunch CakeEasy Strawberry Crunch Cookies or Easy Strawberry Crunch Cheesecake with a Golden Oreo Crust.

    Strawberry Crunch FAQs

Why is it called shortcake topping?

It is called shortcake topping because it will remind you of the outside coating on the Good Humors Strawberry Shortcake bars that you know and love.

    How long will it last?

This strawberry crunch will last for a week at room temperature as long as it is in a good airtight container.  I kept mine in a ziploc bag.

It can also be refrigerated to get a couple of extra days or even frozen for a couple of months.  Just know that the texture of the topping after it defrosts might not be as crisp.

What are some other ways to use this topping?

This crunchy crumble is great on so many things.  In fact, I even caught my husband eating it straight from the zipper bag by itself.  This Easy Strawberry Crunch Cheesecake with a Golden Oreo Crust is the perfect way to use it!

But it would also be wonderful on top of ice cream or on top of a bowl of vanilla pudding with whipped cream.
