Elliott Reminded Me What the Kitchen Is Really For

Lately, something unexpected has been happening in my kitchen.
After all these years of cooking, baking, teaching, recipe testing, running businesses, raising kids and building a life around food, I thought I understood exactly what the kitchen was for.
It was for feeding people.
For creating recipes.
For getting things done.
For work.
For service.
For productivity.
And while all of those things are true, a little boy named Elliott has reminded me there is something even more important.

JOY.
When Elliott comes into the kitchen, he doesn’t care if the counters are spotless.
He doesn’t care if the cookies are perfectly round.
He doesn’t care if the lighting is right or whether what we’re making is “content worthy.”
He cares about pouring.
Stirring.
Sneaking a chocolate chip.
Licking the spoon.
Standing on a stool beside Grammy.
Feeling like he belongs there.
And watching him has changed something in me.
Somewhere along the way, I think many of us start treating the kitchen like another place where things need to be done right, quickly and efficiently.
But children know better.
They know the kitchen is where flour flies.
Where stories are told.
Where waiting for cookies to bake feels exciting.
Where little hands learn.
Where memories are made without anyone realizing it.
Baking with Elliott has softened me.
It has reminded me that the kitchen doesn’t always have to produce something impressive to be valuable.
Sometimes the most important thing made there is confidence.
Connection.
Tradition.
A sense of home.
The cookies are lovely, of course.
But what we’re really making is something bigger.
We’re making a place he associates with warmth and laughter.
We’re making memories he may carry with him forever.

And we’re making moments I know I’ll treasure long after the crumbs are gone.
And maybe, in a beautiful twist, we’re making me new again too.
A little lighter.
A little slower.
A little more grateful.
So if your kitchen has started to feel like one more place to work, maybe it’s time to invite a little joy back in.
Let the measuring be messy.
Let the cookies be imperfect.
Let little hands help.
Let the dishes wait.
Because there is something sacred about a kitchen filled with laughter.
I had forgotten that.
Thankfully, a little boy standing on a stool beside Grammy reminded me.
Sweet Wishes,
June
P.S. Baking with Elliott is the reason Little Baker Approved means so much to me. It’s my way of sharing recipes that make it easy to bring your own little bakers into the kitchen—because sometimes the memories really are better than the cookies. ♥️
