Have you ever bought the Trader Joe’s “Everything” seasoning mix?  Everything you love about an Everything Bagel…without the bagel! It’s full of savory flavor and it elevates a basic party appetizer in just seconds.

My version of the mixture is a little different because I have omitted black sesame seeds.  Partially because I think that one kind of sesame seeds works but also because when you live where I do they don’t exactly carry everything you want.  That includes black sesame seeds.

You still get all of the wonderful flavors and color with the poppy seeds.  Topping the pigs in a blanket with it makes an easy party appetizer, a great game day snack, and the perfect appetizer for the holiday season.  I can’t wait for you to try this pigs in a blanket recipe!

What Goes into this recipe

Ingredients needed to make everything bagel pigs in a blanket.
  • Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough: Use the kind without the perforated seams if you can find it, otherwise refrigerated crescent rolls work. This ingredient is also used for this Pigs in a Blanket Wreath.
  • Little Sausages: I love the Hillshire Farm Lit’l Smokies, but any cocktail sausages or “little wieners” will work.
  • Spices: You can purchase everything seasoning at a grocery store or make your own. I make mine with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, dried garlic and kosher salt.

See recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

How to make Everything Bagel Pigs in a Blanket

  1. Refrigerated crescent roll dough is such an easy and delicious ingredient to use as the “blanket” for the little smokies. When you open the roll, it will be divided into 8 triangles.  Take two triangles and press them together to make 4 rectangles.
  2. Then using a pizza cutter {or sharp knife}, cut each rectangle into 8 strips of dough.  You will still be able to see where the seam is, just press it together if you need to.
Steps 1 and 2 of making everything pigs in a blanket. 1, press crescent rolls together. 2, cut into strips.
  1. Take a strip and wrap it around each little smokie sausage.  Place them onto a silicone mat {or parchment paper} lined baking sheet.  You want them to be about 1 inch apart because the dough will rise a little bit during baking.
  2. To make the “Everything” seasoning mix you will need poppy seeds, sesame seeds, kosher salt, dried minced garlic and dried minced onion. Mix the ingredients together in a small bowl.
Steps 3 and 4 of making everything pigs in a blanket. 3, wrap dough around sausages. 4, make everything seasoning.
  1. To get the mixture to stick to your everything pigs in a blanket, make an egg wash.  I like to use 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water, then whisk it together. Brush the mixture onto the top of each crescent wrapped sausage with a pastry brush and then sprinkle with “everything” seasoning.
  2. Bake in a 425 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown. Serve warm with your favorite dip.  Our favorite is Barbecue Ranch.  I just take 1/2 cup of ranch dressing and 1/4 cup of our favorite barbecue sauce and mix them together.
Steps 5 and 6 of making everything pigs in a blanket. 5, add egg wash and sprinkle with seasoning. 6, bake the pigs in a blanket.

Expert Tips

  • If you can find a crescent dough sheet, use them. This will make it much easier to roll out and cut the dough because you don’t have to worry about the perforated lines. You could also use puff pastry sheets for this.
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut strips of dough. That will make this step go quickly.
  • Don’t skip the egg wash. It will allow the seasoning to stick and give the outside a wonderful deep color.
  • Use store bought everything seasoning.  This is a great option to help save time and they will still be super delicious without homemade everything bagel spice.

Storage and Freezing

Store- Leftover pigs can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days but they are really best fresh like classic pigs in a blanket.

Freeze- I do not recommend freezing this recipe as it will change the texture of the crescent roll.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make pigs in a blanket ahead of time?

You can make them ahead of time but not too far ahead.  The dough can dry out easily, so they really are best when made right before you bake them.

If you do make them ahead, be sure that you cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake.

Do I have to make my own “everything” season mix?

Absolutely not! Using a store-bought spice blend is the perfect way to save time making everything bagel pigs in a blanket and it is just as delicious as making it yourself.

Why is the egg wash important in this recipe?

The egg wash serves two purposes. It allows the everything seasoning to stick to the crescent-wrapped smokies, and it gives the exterior a wonderful deep color during baking.
