The Chocolate Chip Cookie Has it All Figured Out

Dear Chocolate Chip Cookie,

I’ve spent more than 35 years in kitchens, and I’m beginning to think you know something the rest of us don’t.

We live in a world where everything seems to need an upgrade. Bigger houses. Better cars. Fancier vacations. Even desserts have gotten a little out of control.

And yet, here you are.

Baking chocolate chip cookies with my grandson.

The same chocolate chip cookie you’ve always been. Golden, buttery edges. A soft center. Little pockets of melted chocolate tucked into every bite.

No fancy frosting. No elaborate filling. No need to reinvent yourself every other Tuesday.

And somehow, you’re still everyone’s favorite.

I’m starting to think you have it all figured out.

I’ve baked just about every dessert imaginable. Fancy cakes, towering cheesecakes and bakery-style cookies stuffed with all sorts of delicious things. I’ve owned a bakery, taught hundreds of students how to cook and built an entire business around creating recipes.

But if I’m being completely honest, at the end of the day, I’d still choose you and an ice-cold Diet Coke.

Every. Single. Time.

And it’s not just me.

When I was teaching high school culinary arts, we had a day every semester that quickly became one of everyone’s favorites.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Day.

Now, getting a classroom full of teenagers to agree on anything is practically a miracle. My students came from different homes, had different interests and held different opinions about just about everything.

But announce that we were making chocolate chip cookies?

Suddenly, everyone was interested.

They gathered around their kitchen stations, measured ingredients, mixed dough and worked together toward one common goal.

Getting their hands on a warm chocolate chip cookie.

For one class period, a group of kids who might not have had much else in common found themselves laughing, working together and impatiently watching the oven timers.

Not bad for a cookie.

These days, you’ve found yourself a new fan.

His name is Elliott, he’s two years old, and I’m pretty sure he thinks you’re fantastic.

Although I’m not entirely convinced he’s interested in the finished product.

He’s much more concerned with quality control. Specifically, making sure the chocolate chips taste good before they go into the dough.

Apparently, quality control requires a LOT of sampling.

And I absolutely love it.

Because here I am, all these years later, making the same cookies I once made with my own kids and spent eight years making with my students. Only now, I’m making them with my grandson.

I hope someday the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking takes him right back to these afternoons in Grammy’s kitchen. Because Elliott has reminded me that what happens in the kitchen is about so much more than the food.

And that’s the thing about you.

You’ve been there through just about every season of my life.

Cooling on kitchen counters while my kids waited impatiently nearby. Packed into lunchboxes. Delivered to friends. Stacked onto holiday trays. Shared around tables after dinner.

You’ve been there for celebrations and heartbreaks. Holidays, bad days, good days and all the ordinary days in between.

There’s something about the smell of you baking that changes the entire feeling of a house.

Suddenly, everything feels warmer. Softer. A little more like home.

And I think I’m finally beginning to understand why.

You don’t try to be something you’re not.

While the rest of the world is busy chasing the next big thing, you just keep showing up.

Grabbing a chocolate chip cookie.

And people love you for it.

I wonder how much happier we’d all be if we took a little advice from you.

Because somewhere along the way, I think we’ve convinced ourselves that the next thing is always going to be the best thing.

The next accomplishment. The next purchase. The next chapter of our lives.

And sometimes, in all that looking ahead, we overlook the very things that make our lives wonderful.

The friend who always answers the phone.

The familiar sound of someone we love walking through the door.

The traditions we repeat year after year, even when we can’t remember exactly when they started.

The people who show up for us, not just for the exciting moments, but for all the ordinary ones in between.

Maybe those things don’t look particularly impressive from the outside.

But neither do you.

And look at everything you’ve given us.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting more out of life. I still have dreams, goals and plenty of desserts I want to bake.

But I’m learning that wanting more and appreciating what I already have don’t have to be opposites.

I can look forward to what’s next without overlooking what’s right here.

So thank you, Chocolate Chip Cookie.

For making kitchens smell like home and ordinary afternoons feel special.

For reminding me that sometimes the best things in life aren’t the things we spend years chasing.

They’re the things we keep coming back to.

Maybe the secret isn’t always finding something better. Maybe it’s recognizing just how good some things already are.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe there’s a warm chocolate chip cookie and an ice-cold Diet Coke calling my name.

And after all these years, I see absolutely no reason to change that.

With love and a few extra chocolate chips,

June
