Celebrating the 4th of July is the best because we always have a family reunion at one of my favorite places on earth.  Getting together with family from near and far, fireworks and lots of fun make it a one of a kind holiday.  That deserves a one of a kind dish, like this Red White and Blue Fruit Salad.

When I think of a fruit salad the one thing that I want is for it to be REFRESHING.  Summer is the ultimate time to buy fruit, so finding ripe fresh fruit is easy to do.

Taking it a step further and adding a bit of Lime Simple Syrup to the top of the salad will give it that quality that makes people come back for more.  It also has another purpose but lets talk about that in a minute.

What kind of Fruit to put in your Red White & Blue Salad?

The awesome thing about fruit salad is that really anything goes, that is unless you are going with a theme.  I chose watermelon, strawberries, red grapes, blueberries and honey crisp apples but don’t let that keep you from expanding your selections.

You could also add cherries, raspberries, pomegranate seeds, blood orange or blackberries.

Now we are to the really exciting part {or at least for me it is}.  Making the stars is so easy to do and they look like you spent so much time slaving over them.  All you need is a small star cookie cutter and an apple.

Instead of cutting the apple in wedges, cut them it from the core and make long but wide {wide enough for the cookie cutter} apple slices.  Then just cut them out with the cookie cutter.  Super simple.

What does adding Lime Simple Syrup do to the Fruit Salad?

The final touch is about 1/4 cup of Lime Simple Syrup.  It not only adds fabulous flavor in the way of a little citrus and sweetness but it also helps keep the apples from turning brown.  Stir to coat and serve.

Can this Refreshing Red White and Blue Salad be made ahead?

So here is the thing…you can make this salad ahead of time but really is better if you don’t do it too far ahead.  You also want to be sure that your apples are coated or submerged in the Lime Simple Syrup to prevent oxidation.

Perhaps my very favorite part of this salad is that it also works for dessert.  Refreshing Red White and Blue Fruit Salad is perfect for a summer time dessert, especially when you are wanting something light.
