I was a little skeptical that baking a cheese stick would take away from the textures we love from the deep fried version.  I am happy to report that they are still crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.  The key is to give them the 2-3 minutes after baking to set up/cool.  They also heat up really well.  Just pop them in the oven for a few minutes or even in the microwave and enjoy.

Begin by cutting 12 sticks of string cheese in half and placing them onto a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet.  Freeze them for 15-30 minutes.

While they are freezing prepare your dredging station.  You will need three bowls for flour, egg and panko bread crumbs.

Once the cheese sticks are frozen, roll them in flour and be sure to tap the side of the bowl to remove any extra flour.

Then add the floured cheese stick into the egg mixture.

And finally, into the panko bread crumb mixture.  Roll them into the mixture and press the crumbs onto the cheese stick.

Once coated, place them onto a foil lined baking sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick spray.  Place them back into the freezer for another 15 minutes.  Spray tops of cheese sticks with non-stick spray before baking.

Bake for 8-9 minutes or until cheese is heated and crumbs are golden brown.

Serve with warm pizza sauce.

Your family and friends are sure to go crazy for these.  They are such a fun and simple appetizer to make.  Just look at the cheese pull…so delish!!

Ingredients

  • 12 sticks mozzarella {cut in half}
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 eggs {whisked with 1 tsp water}
  • 1 cup Italian panko bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

pizza sauce for dipping

    Instructions

    • Place cheese stick halves in a single layer onto a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet and freeze for at least 15 minutes.  When ready to bake preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Fill three bowls, 1-with flour, 2-with eggs and 3-panko with seasonings {I like to put the three bowls onto a cookie sheet for easy cleanup}.  Working 1 stick at a time.  Dip cheese stick into flour and shake off any excess, move to egg mixture and then to panko.  Roll and pat to coat cheese stick with panko and place onto a baking sheet that has been prepared by covering it with aluminum foil and spraying with non-stick spray.  Repeat until all of the sticks have been coated.  Place back into the freezer for 15 minutes.  Remove from freezer, spray tops of cheese sticks with non-stick spray and bake for 8-9 minutes or until cheese is heated and crumbs are golden brown.  Let them set for 2-3 minutes before serving with warm pizza sauce.

    Notes

    *Prepare cheese sticks to just before baking and freeze them.  When ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 8-9 minutes.
