Puff pastry is the star of the show in this Cinco de Mayo dessert.  The crisp layers of dough bake up to create amazing churros without frying them.

The best part is that using frozen dough saves so much time.  There is no need to make pate choux dough in a medium saucepan on the stove top.  You don’t have to add the dough to a pastry bag with a star tip.  No standing over a pot of hot oil and waiting for the fried-dough pastry to cook through.

Instead, you cut strips of dough and bake them in a preheated oven for 10 minutes.  A quick bath in silky butter and delicious cinnamon sugar creates simple homemade baked churros that are perfect in every way.

Expert Tips

  • Use the fold lines in the dough to make the first cuts in the puff pastry.  This helps to keep the churro dough the same size.
  • Use a pizza cutter, instead of a sharp knife to cut the pastry dough.  This will make it super simple and give you nice clean cuts.
  • Work while the baked puff pastry is warm.  This will help the churros to absorb the melted butter and in turn easily coats the outside in cinnamon sugar.
  • Serve the churros warm with your sauce of choice.  Since these sweet treats only take a few minutes to make, it is a recipe that can easily be served warm.
  • Cut the dough into small chunks and bake into churro bites.  This will create sweet bite-sized churros that are super fun to eat.

Recipe FAQs

How do I store baked churros?

Store easy baked churros in a good air-tight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.

Leftover churros can be heated in the microwave if you prefer them warm.

Why is my churro soggy?

With this baked churro recipe you might end up with a soggy end result if you let the strips soak too long in the melted butter.

When you are frying them however, the main reason would be that your oil is either not hot enough or you are over crowding the pan.

How can I keep the churros crispy?

To ensure a crisp churro, line the airtight container with a layer of paper towel which will help absorb any moisture.

I would also store the baked treats at room temperature because the refrigerator may also cause a soggy texture.

Can I double the recipe?

Absolutely!  Puff pastry is sold in the frozen section of the grocery store.  Use both sheets and double the amount of butter, cinnamon and sugar to create two dozen baked churros.
