I am so excited to be typing this post for Easy Baked Churros from the comfort of my hotel in Layton, Utah.  For the next few days I will be attending the Everything Food Conference in the hopes of networking with other food bloggers, learning more about how to make Practically Homemade a success and getting more inspiration than I can handle.  If you don’t follow me on Instagram than I invite you to do so because I will be posting updates about my experience throughout the week {practicallyhomemadejune}.

As you probably already know…I write recipes a couple of times a month for our local newspaper, The Lake County Examiner.  Last week was Cinco de Mayo and so this recipe is what I came up with and I can’t stop thinking about them.  I love Churros!!  When I go to an amuzement park the first thing I want to find is a Churro Cart.  Mother’s Day is Sunday and I am assuming that if this mama likes them…then your mama will too.

The best thing about this recipe is that they are simple to pull together because we are using puff pastry dough as the base.  If you have never used puff pastry before then you will find it in the freezer section of the grocery store.  The box comes with two sheets of dough and it only takes about 20 minutes for it to thaw out at room temperature.   I love the unlimited possibilities that it presents.  Sweet or savory dishes are endless with the addition of puff pastry dough.  It works well in this recipe because of the texture.  When it bakes up it is light and airy on the inside but still crisp on the outside…just like the coveted Churro I know and love.

Here are some other recipes that use puff pastry as the base…Apple Cream Cheese Breakfast Braid, and Caprese Tart.

When you grab a sheet of puff pastry it is folded into thirds and in this case I used those seams as guides to cut my strips of dough.

I cut it into thirds and then I cut each long strip into 9 long rectangles.  I like to use a pizza cutter but a sharp knife works great too.

Lay them on an ungreased cookie sheet, being sure that they are far enough apart because they will grow as they bake.

I am always suprised when I open the oven to this…

To get the cinnamon and sugar mixture to stick {and add more flavor} I rolled each puff pastry strip into melted butter.

Then immediately rolled it in cinnamon and sugar.

It doesn’t take long before you have a plate full of goodness!

Perfectly crisp on the outside and yet soft and pillowy on the inside.

I served it with salted caramel sauce but honestly, they were perfect on their own.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry {thawed}
  • 1/2 cup butter {melted}
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 jar salted caramel sauce {optional}

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Unfold the thawed sheet of puff pastry dough and lay it out flat on a cutting board. Cut down the the two folds of the pastry, this will give you three long pieces of dough. Then run your knife {or pizza cutter} across each piece and make 1 inch wide strips. Transfer them to a baking sheet {it doesn’t need to be greased} and bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

  2. While the churros are baking, get the rest of the ingredients ready. Melt one stick of butter. Combine the sugar and cinnamon, stir until well mixed. Once the dough is cooked you are going to dip each strip into the butter and then roll into the cinnamon & sugar mixture, being sure to coat all sides. Continue until all of the churros have been coated. Serve with Salted Caramel Sauce and enjoy!!
